EVOA Eye Vitamins for Macular Degeneration Study Information

During the 1990s the National Eye Institute, part of the federal government’s National Institutes of Health, conducted a study of the effects of a high-potency anti-oxidant vitamin / mineral formulation on vision, particularly with regard to cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).  This study, called AREDS1, showed great promise for patients with AMD, but no apparent effects in those with cataracts.

Since the original formulation tested contained beta-carotene, and subsequent other studies appeared to link the consumption of high levels of beta-carotene to an increased risk of lung cancer in some populations, a second study was started, called AREDS2, in which lutein and zeaxanthin (two other powerful anti-oxidants) were substituted for beta-carotene.  The results of this study, published in 2013, appear to confirm the promising results of the original AREDS1 study.

Ophthalmologists worldwide are excited by these results, and many are urging their patients to take dietary supplements..
